The Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) prohibits the intentional feeding of wildlife by laying out food, grain, hay, salt or mineral licks with the intent to feed or attract certain wildlife (including wild deer). Wildlife experts say it can disrupt natural behavior and cause unintended harm. Supplemental feeding often congregates deer in unnaturally high numbers, which increases the spread of diseases such as Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) which is a significant concern in the state. Supplemental feeding can also lead to dependency on human-provided food, reduce deer’s ability to forage naturally, and create nutritional imbalances when they are given inappropriate foods. Additionally, feeding can attract deer to roads and residential areas, increasing the risk of vehicle collisions and damage to property. The PGC urges residents to avoid feeding wild deer and instead support them by maintaining natural habitat and allowing them to rely on native food sources.
